Getting Started

Dressmaker has two doors. One is the Steam store page, which you wishlist for the 21 September 2026 Windows and macOS launch. The other is the itch.io prototype, Prototype 0.5.5, a name-your-price zip for Windows, macOS, and Linux that you can play today. This page is the day-one path through both. It is not a claim that the Steam shop is playable yet.

Wishlist first even if you plan to live in the prototype for a week. The store page is where price, language, and launch-day builds will land. Official news on 7 September 2026 set $14.99 with regional pricing and a 10% launch discount. Story commissions are about 35 hours excluding off-the-rack work. Treat those numbers as full-game context, not as prototype length.

Download, Mac warnings, and the tutorial

Grab the matching zip: Windows 0.5.5, OSX 0.5.5, or Linux 0.5.5. The prototype is not Apple-notarized, so macOS may warn that the app is unverified. Open System Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Open Anyway if you trust the official itch files. Do not download rehosted executables. Confirm dates and file names on the prototype notes if a mirror looks off.

Before you chase a high score, read keyboard and mouse controls and skim system requirements. Sewing is mouse click-drag or Space plus arrow keys. Steam Deck support is still unknown, so do not assume a handheld layout.

The in-game tutorial walks the stations in order. Stay inside it. The first time the cutting table appears, look for the grain-line arrow on each piece. Horizontal arrows turn the outline green. That green is not decoration. A misaligned piece will cap quality later even if the sewing looks clean. The cutting guide exists because this is the mistake that wrecks first commissions.

The first library client

Your early counter job is often a library or work-appropriate brief. Budget sits near 300. Style tags lean Professional, not Cute ballgown. That combination is a teaching tool: cheap cotton or linen, a modest bodice, sleeves that look employed, and almost no velvet. If you blow the purse on silk, you will either miss the budget score or strip the shop of coin before the second client. Customers and commissions explains why occasion and budget beat personal taste on day one.

Play the full loop once without improvising. Open the sketchbook, pick a professional silhouette, pin a fabric sample that the brief can afford, draft the pattern, buy only the metres you need, cut on grain, sew slowly, add a restrained button or two, and deliver. How to Play is the ordered checklist if you stall between rooms. How to Sew is the page to open the moment the red follow-dot drifts off the marching-ants line.

Do not treat the trailer’s sabotage joke as a day-one strategy. You can theoretically send a disastrous dress. Reputation, coin, and the newspaper move when you match the brief. Save chaos for a later save file after you understand scoring.

Leftover fabric, the cat, and shop rhythm

Offcuts are inventory. After a cut, leftover bolts stay in the shop and can cover facings, smaller sleeves, or the next modest commission. Buying a full expensive length “just in case” is how 300-coin jobs bankrupt you. Recut from leftovers before you walk back to the fabric shop. The prototype has had a save-and-reload quirk that restored metres; the team has said that does not happen in the full game, so do not build a money strategy on it.

Pet the cat. The press kit lists it as a feature on purpose. It does not raise stitch quality, but it is part of the shop’s idle rhythm between clients, and it is an easy way to remember you are not in a combat sim.

After delivery, read whatever newspaper or gossip the shop offers. Early write-ups tell you whether the town saw a professional, a disaster, or something glamorous you were not asked for. That feedback is the same loop the full game will stretch across prestige unlocks and the emporium.

What the Steam version adds

Prototype 0.5.5 is a short, tactile class. The Steam shop is the product Cozy Lives is shipping on 21 September 2026. Measurements and mannequin sizing are a Steam-version focus; the prototype had less of that fitting work. Off-the-rack / shop-window selling is a full-game focus, sitting outside the ~35-hour story-commission estimate. Expect 150+ dress pieces, 450+ fabrics, and 350+ accessories, plus lace and sequins that the prototype only hints at. The team has also described a Sewing Assist toggle in the full-game options for players who cannot drag the mouse through every curve.

Unity, single-player, English / Simplified Chinese / Japanese with full audio: those facts are for the Steam listing. This wiki’s locales are English and Japanese. Price, platforms, and launch-week patches belong on the Steam launch page. If sewing still feels like the whole game after two commissions, you are ready for the deeper pages. If it feels like a charming sketch with unfinished seams, that is an accurate reading of 0.5.5; the prototype review separates who should keep practising from who should wait for September.

Day-one close: wishlist Steam, keep the official itch zip, finish one professional library dress on grain, bank the leftover cloth, pet the cat, and only then open a ball brief you cannot yet afford.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for launch week, the prototype, and the sewing loop.

Can I play Dressmaker before 21 September 2026?

Yes. Prototype 0.5.5 is a name-your-price download on [itch.io](https://elyaradine.itch.io/dressmaker) for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The Steam version is still upcoming. See prototype notes for the file list.

What does the first client usually want?

The early library-style job often budgets around 300 and asks for professional, work-appropriate clothing. Save silk and velvet for later ball briefs. Details sit in Customers and Commissions.

Should I throw leftover fabric away?

No. Leftover bolts are reusable inventory. Recut small pieces from them before buying more. The cutting guide covers packing and recuts.

Does petting the cat change scores?

It is a shop interaction, not a hidden quality buff. Do it between commissions. Scoring still comes from grain, stitch line, style match, and budget.

What is missing from the prototype?

Measurements and mannequin sizing are a Steam-version feature, and off-the-rack window selling is a full-game focus. Compare builds on the Steam launch page after you finish How to Play.

Where are the sewing keys listed?

Use mouse click-drag or Space plus arrows. The full map is on controls. Practise the red follow-dot in How to Sew before you raise machine speed.
