Dressmaker Measurements and Fit

Tape the client, set the mannequin, and treat fit as a quality score on Steam.

Measurements and Fit

Fitting is the station Prototype 0.5.5 taught you to skip. In the itch zip you dress a default body, hang the result on a stand, and hope the townsfolk like the silhouette. The Steam shop planned for 21 September 2026 is supposed to treat bodies as data. Official shorts and developer videos show a tape measure on clients, an adjustable mannequin, and a lattice deformer that scales pattern pieces. April Tea named character measurement and mannequin fitting as full-game work. This page is how to use those tools when they ship, and what not to hunt for in 0.5.5.

Cozy Lives paused prototype sizing research rather than shipping a half-broken tape. That is why the public zip still feels like a dress-up mannequin with excellent grain rules. Do not treat that pause as a cancelled feature. Treat it as a warning: the loop you practise now is sketch, cut, sew; the loop you buy in September adds measure, then set the form, then draft. Unity still runs a single-player Windows and macOS shop. App 4019220 is still upcoming. None of that changes the order of operations once a real tape exists.

How to take tape measurements

Start at the counter, not at the sketchbook. After you hear occasion, style, and budget from Customers and Commissions, take the tape to the body in front of you. Real dressmaking uses bust, waist, hip, back length, and sometimes nape-to-waist or armscye. Dressmaker’s official clips show a character measurement pass that feeds the form rather than a spreadsheet you type by hand. Follow the on-screen prompts. Do not invent numbers because a previous client looked similar.

Write the brief and the measures together. A 300-coin library job on a short torso is a different pattern from a 300-coin library job on a long torso, even if both tags say Professional. Taste lives in the book. Fit lives on the tape. Mixing them is how you sew a beautiful dress that bunches at the waist.

If the Steam UI lets you re-measure, do it when a new client walks in. Do not reuse a saved form because the last ballgown hung well. The lattice deformer exists so pieces scale; it does not exist so you can ignore the person at the till. A ball client with a 1000-coin example purse still needs a circumference that matches their body, not a default mesh wearing expensive velvet.

Keep the tape in the same mental slot as budget. You would not spend 400 coin on a 300-coin brief. Do not cut a size-16 waist for a size-10 client because the sketch looked balanced on your screen. Numbers first, silhouette second.

Set the mannequin before you cut

The adjustable mannequin is the physical copy of those numbers. Dial it to the client, then look at the stand the way you already look at grain arrows. If the form is still on a default size, every later green outline is a lie about a different body.

Hang toile-level thinking on the stand: does the bodice close, does the skirt sit at the waist you measured, do the sleeves clear the arm. Official fitting talk treats this as a quality input, not a cosmetic zoom. Fit can score quality. A perfect stitch on a too-tight bodice should not read as a perfect dress.

Then go to the cutting table. Grain still caps construction. Measurements cap whether the construction belongs on that person. You need both. Pack leftovers as usual; scaled pieces still waste coin if you Swiss-cheese the bolt. Recut when the form shows a drag line you refused to see in the book.

The lattice deformer is the behind-the-scenes reason scaled pieces do not simply stretch like a bad image. Developer research showed mesh lattice work so a sleeve cap grows with the armscye instead of smearing. You will not play the lattice like a minigame. You will notice it when a plus-size ball client and a petite librarian can share a silhouette without sharing a circumference.

Rotate the mannequin the way Prototype 0.5.5 already taught you for lace pins. Angle is still a placement tool. Size is the new tool. Do not confuse the two. Spinning a default stand does not count as measuring.

Why fit will matter on Steam

Delivery already reads quality, style, and budget in the prototype. Steam adds a body that can disagree with the hang. That is the point of a sewing sim that hired a dressmaking consultant. Sabrina Becker’s influence is why grain is not a sticker; measurements are the next honest layer.

Style tags do not forgive a dragging hem. Budget does not forgive a recut you needed because you skipped the tape. Ready-to-wear pieces in the shop window will need a size story of their own: an off-the-rack dress is not a bespoke ticket. If you hang a one-size wonder in the window, expect the full game to care whether that wonder actually fits anyone.

Practise discipline now even without a tape. In 0.5.5, pick silhouettes that would survive a real waist. Do not sketch a bodice that only works on the default mesh and then act surprised in September. Cotton library dresses are still the right classroom: cheap fibre, modest ease, obvious mistakes. Velvet opera gowns hide fit faults until the client turns.

When the Steam catalogue opens with 150-plus pieces and 450-plus fabrics, more choice makes it easier to ignore the body. Pin samples like a stingy illustrator, then scale those samples to the form you actually measured. The newspaper should report a dress that closed on the person who asked for it.

What Prototype 0.5.5 lacks

The itch build is commission-first and sizing-light. You can rotate the mannequin to place lace. You cannot run the April Tea measurement pass as a complete system. Prototype research existed; it was paused. Official shorts confirm sizing is coming in the full game, not hiding as an unlisted 0.5.5 hotkey.

Do not download an APK or a “measurement patch” zip. Do not treat a video overlay as a leaked options menu. The public file list is still Windows, OSX, and Linux 0.5.5. Sizing belongs on the Steam launch calendar with the 21 September 2026 shop, the 14.99 USD price, and the rest of the finished content.

If a friend says the prototype already has full fitting, send them this page. Fitting research is real. The playable tape-and-score loop is a Steam promise. Practise grain and the red follow-dot until those are boring. Then, on launch week, add the tape as a new first station rather than bolting it onto a panicked ballgown.

When 21 September 2026 arrives, measure first, set the form second, draft third. Leave the default mannequin in the corner where it belongs: a prototype teaching aid, not the body that walks into a finished Cape Town shop.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for launch week, the prototype, and the sewing loop.

Does Prototype 0.5.5 include tape measurements?

No complete tape-and-score loop. Prototype sizing research existed and was paused. Official shorts place measurements in the full Steam game, not in the itch zip.

Will fit affect quality on Steam?

Official fitting talk treats mannequin fit as a quality input. A clean stitch on the wrong size should not read as a perfect delivery. Confirm the store and tooltips at launch.

What is the lattice deformer?

Developer research for scaling pattern pieces with the body so a sleeve grows with the armscye instead of smearing. You set measurements; the lattice is the behind-the-scenes mesh work.

Should I measure before I sketch?

Yes. Hear the brief on Customers and Commissions, tape the body, set the mannequin, then open the sketchbook. Drafting a default size wastes cloth.

Do off-the-rack dresses need measurements too?

Ready-to-wear is not a named bespoke ticket. The shop window still has to hang on a real body. Do not assume one default size covers the town.

When does sizing actually ship?

With the Steam shop planned for 21 September 2026. Wishlist app 4019220 and read the Steam launch page rather than hunting a hidden 0.5.5 menu.
