Dressmaker Prototype Notes
0.5.5 on itch.io: what works, what glitches, and how it differs from Steam.
Prototype 0.5.5 is the public Dressmaker build on itch.io. It is a name-your-price download for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It is not the Steam game. The Steam shop is planned for 21 September 2026 on Windows and macOS. Play the prototype to learn grain, sewing, and customers. Do not treat it as a cracked full version, and do not download an APK that claims to be 0.5.5.
The first prototype went up in August 2025, built in about three weeks by elyaradine, sarandipityx, and raithza at Free Lives. 18 September 2025 brought a bigger 0.5 drop with easier sewing, more accessories and fabrics, a new skirt, and lace trim, plus the Steam wishlist page. 3 October 2025 is the 0.5.5 hotfix that still sits on the download list. Later “Tea” posts describe full-game work (measurements, shaders, off-the-rack) that is not in this zip.
What 0.5.5 actually is
A short, tactile loop: take a request, sketch, buy cotton through velvet, cut, sew, decorate, deliver. Unfinished seams are part of the pitch. The itch.io page says ideas were left on the cutting-room floor. Music is by Meydän. You can pet the cat. You can also make a horrible dress on purpose.

0.5.5 notes players actually feel
Lace controls. Lace trim arrived in the 0.5 line. 0.5.5 continues that work. It is still fussy. Set the mannequin angle, place one pin at a time, use a mouse. If the path bunches, undo. Do not stack a second lace on a broken first. Rank lace as optional prestige on accessories.
Tutorial improvements. Later 0.5 patches tried to make sewing easier to learn. Trust the on-screen prompts. Then keep how to play and controls open for Space versus click-drag and the speed limiter.
Small art and grain fixes. The 0.5.5 hotfix also touched pieces such as a flounce sleeve sprite and ruffle-skirt grain naming. Old ruffle skirts in a save can still order panels oddly. If a ruffle looks possessed, recut on a fresh ticket.
Thread color. Not customizable in the prototype. Sew on the marching-ants line because the stitch will show.
Mac: Open Anyway
The prototype is not notarized. Apple may warn that it cannot check for malicious software. That warning is expected. Cozy Lives documented the bypass:
- Open System Settings.
- Go to Privacy & Security, scroll to the blocked-app message.
- Click Open Anyway, then Open again on the second prompt.
- Enter your password if macOS asks.
Only do this for the zip you downloaded from the official itch.io page. Do not Open Anyway a random Dressmaker.app from a forum. Steam’s September build should install through the Steam client and should not need this dance.

How to use the prototype well
Practice cotton everyday tickets until grain arrows and the limiter are boring. Then linen garden, then one silk. Leave velvet until you can sew a curve without watching your hands. Use the quality checklist even though scores may be simpler than launch. Report real bugs on Discord or itch.io comments with the version number 0.5.5 in the sentence.
When you are done for the night, wishlist Steam from the Steam launch page so the prototype does not become your only copy by accident. 0.5.5 is a generous rehearsal. It is also a year old relative to the full shop. Enjoy the zip, log the quirks, and let 21 September 2026 be a different install — paid, larger, and still the same click-drag needle you already know.
