Dressmaker System Requirements
Steam Windows and macOS minimums, prototype Linux, and what 8 GB RAM actually means.
Dressmaker is a cozy Unity shop, not a ray-traced shooter, but it still has a floor. The Steam store currently lists Windows and macOS for the full game planned on 21 September 2026. The itch.io Prototype 0.5.5 also ships a Linux zip. Steam’s API text sometimes mentions Ubuntu or Mint minimums even though platforms.linux is not enabled on the store. This wiki follows the storefront: plan on Windows or macOS for launch day, and treat Linux as a prototype convenience until Cozy Lives says otherwise.
There is no official mobile or console version. APK sites and “Steam Deck verified” claims that are not on the store are noise. Steam Deck compatibility is listed as unknown. Family sharing, Cloud, and achievements are Steam features for the full app, not reasons to lower the hardware bar.
Windows minimum (Steam)
- OS: Windows 10 or later
- CPU: Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen (the store wording is that broad; a modern dual-core i5-class chip is the spirit, not a 2009 netbook)
- RAM: 8 GB
- GPU: Intel UHD 630 or better
- DirectX: 11
- Storage: 1 GB available space
Integrated graphics at UHD 630 level are enough on paper. Close Chrome tabs if you sew on a work laptop. The sewing machine and fabric shaders (silk sheen, velvet pile) are the moments that hitch, not the shop counter. If the prototype already stutters on your machine, do not assume the full catalog of 450-plus fabrics will run lighter.
macOS minimum (Steam)
- CPU: Apple M1
- RAM: 8 GB
- Storage: 1 GB available space
The Steam minimum is Apple Silicon. Intel Macs are not in that sentence. If you are on an older Intel Mac, try Prototype 0.5.5 first and do not pre-order a promise the store did not make. M1 and later with 8 GB will run the shop; 8 GB is still the whole computer, so quit heavy browsers while silk shaders compile.
Mac prototype players hit Gatekeeper because the itch.io app is not notarized. That is not a spec fail. Use Open Anyway under Privacy & Security, as documented on prototype notes. The Steam build should install through the client like other paid titles.
Linux: prototype yes, Steam store no
Prototype 0.5.5 offers a Linux zip (about 127 MB) next to Windows (about 115 MB) and macOS (about 128 MB). That is the official way to play on Ubuntu-class desktops today. The Steam store page, as of this writing, does not list Linux as a launch platform even if requirement text in the API mentions Mint or Ubuntu. Say it plainly to friends: wishlist the Windows or macOS Steam app; play Linux on itch.io until the store changes.
If you are on Linux for the prototype, keep GPU drivers current. Unity titles often want a working OpenGL or Vulkan stack more than a huge VRAM number. The 1 GB Steam storage line is still a fair disk budget; the prototype zips are well under that.
Prototype versus full game load
| Item | Prototype 0.5.5 (itch.io) | Steam full game (planned) |
|---|---|---|
| Platforms | Windows, macOS, Linux | Store lists Windows, macOS |
| Disk | ~115–128 MB zip | 1 GB listed |
| RAM | Comfortable on 8 GB; many play on less | 8 GB minimum on the store |
| GPU | Light 2D/3D shop | UHD 630+ / M1 |
| Online | None required to sew | Steam client, Cloud, achievements |
Single-player means you can sew offline once the files are there. Cloud saves are a Steam launch feature, not something to expect from a loose itch.io folder. Keep a manual copy of prototype saves if you care about them; they are not guaranteed to import.
Comfort features that are not hardware
Steam lists custom volume, a mouse-only option, and playable without timed input. Those flags live on controls, but they affect who can use a low-spec machine. A slow CPU plus a high sewing speed feels worse than a slow CPU plus the limiter. Turn the limiter down before you buy a new laptop for a 1 GB sewing sim.
A pre-launch hardware pass
- Confirm OS: Windows 10+ or Apple M1+.
- Confirm 8 GB RAM free enough to actually allocate; 8 GB with 90% used is not 8 GB.
- Confirm GPU at or above UHD 630, or any M1 iGPU.
- Free 1 GB on the Steam drive, more if you keep the prototype zip beside it.
- Run Prototype 0.5.5 for twenty minutes of cutting and sewing. If that hitch-fest is unplayable, the full shop will not magically feel like a spreadsheet.
- Ignore APKs, “low-spec Android ports,” and random exe mirrors. Hardware pages are the first place those scams attach. Official links stay on the links hub.
If the prototype sings and your specs clear the table, you are done. Spend the remaining attention on quality and how to play, not on shopping for a new GPU. Dressmaker wants a steady 8 GB machine and a mouse, not a launch-day graphics card. Bookmark this page next to Steam launch so platform rumors do not outrun the store page on 21 September 2026.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for launch week, the prototype, and the sewing loop.
Does Steam Dressmaker support Linux?
The store currently lists Windows and macOS. A Linux zip exists for Prototype 0.5.5 on itch.io. Do not assume a Steam Linux build until the store says so.
Can I play on an Intel Mac?
Steam’s macOS minimum is Apple M1. Try the itch.io prototype if you are on Intel, and do not treat that test as a launch guarantee.
Is 8 GB RAM enough?
It is the listed minimum. Close heavy browsers while sewing. Silk and velvet shaders are the hitch points, not the dialogue.
Will it run on Intel UHD 630?
That is the Windows GPU minimum. Keep drivers current and lower other load. If the prototype already stutters hard, expect the full catalog to feel heavier.
Is there an official APK?
No. Dressmaker is a desktop Steam title plus an itch.io prototype. Skip mobile reuploads; use the links hub.
Do I need internet to sew?
The loop is single-player. Steam needs the client for install, Cloud, and achievements. The prototype runs from a local folder after you download it.
