Prototype Review

This is a preview of Prototype 0.5.5, the name-your-price itch.io build from elyaradine, sarandipityx, and raithza. It is not a review of the Steam game, because that game is still upcoming on 21 September 2026. It is not a paid preview. Nobody at Cozy Lives or Free Lives commissioned this page. If you want dates and price without opinion, use the Steam launch notes and the prototype notes.

The itch page is honest about what you are downloading: a prototype first built in about three weeks, later patched, with unfinished seams and ideas left on the cutting-room floor. That sentence should set your mood. Players who treat 0.5.5 as a $14.99 product will feel cheated. Players who treat it as a tactile class in grain, packing, and the red follow-dot usually come away glad they tried it.

What already works

The loop is the hook. Request, sketch, shop, cut, sew, trim, deliver. It is closer to a real workroom than to a dress-up doll. The cutting table’s green outline, explained in the cutting guide, is a better tutorial than a paragraph of UI text. The sewing machine’s marching-ants line, covered in How to Sew, is stressful in a way that still feels fair once you learn to pause. Leftover bolts turning into the next sleeve is the kind of inventory idea fashion games usually skip.

Sabrina Becker’s dressmaking consultancy shows. Grain is not a cosmetic arrow. Bias is a real choice. Style tags mean something at the counter. The first library-style job at around 300 coin, professional and work-appropriate, is a good teacher. Ball briefs at higher budgets, with 1000 as a useful example, make silk feel like a decision instead of a default.

The shop fantasy is gentle without being empty. Petting the cat, reading the newspaper, and walking back to a messy table between clients is the Cozy Lives tone that made Free Lives spin out this label next to Terra Nil. Meydän’s music helps the machine feel like a place rather than a minigame overlay.

If that loop clicks, you do not need this review to tell you to wishlist Steam. You already know. Use Getting Started and How to Play as the practical follow-up.

What is still unfinished

Seams, lace placement, and some sleeve or ruffle edges can feel half-sewn because they are. Accessories sometimes fight collars. Contrast on pale fabric can hide the stitch path. Linux players have reported missing frame caps. macOS may warn because the build is not notarized. A save-and-reload quirk has restored fabric metres; the team has said the full game does not do that.

The story is a sip, not the ~35-hour commission campaign the Steam news described. Measurements and mannequin sizing are a Steam-version feature; the prototype had less. Off-the-rack window selling is a full-game focus you should not expect as a finished economy here. The catalogue is a sample of 150+ pieces, 450+ fabrics, and 350+ accessories, not the thing itself.

None of that is a secret. The itch page says it. Reviewing the prototype as if those gaps were launch bugs would be unfair. Reviewing Steam in advance as if 0.5.5 were the shipped game would be worse.

Who should download itch today

Download Prototype 0.5.5 if you want to know whether feeding cloth under a speed-limited machine is relaxing or maddening for your hands. Download it if you sew in real life and want to see grain treated with respect. Download it if you are curious whether a Free Lives studio can make a cozy craft game that is not a joke about their usual slapstick. Pay what you want; zero is allowed, and it does not buy you the Steam licence.

Wait for Steam if unfinished UI will poison the idea for you. Wait if you need a long character story, a polished mannequin, or a shop window to keep playing after a handful of named clients. Wait if mouse-drag sewing is physically hard and you want the Sewing Assist toggle the team has described for the full options menu. Wait if you only have a Steam Deck and need an official verdict; compatibility is still unknown.

The Steam shop is priced at $14.99 with regional pricing and a 10% launch discount, announced 7 September 2026, single-player, Windows and macOS, Unity, English / Simplified Chinese / Japanese with full audio. That is the product to judge in late September. This page will not pretend it has already been judged.

A fair close: Prototype 0.5.5 is one of the better craft previews on itch this year, and it is still a preview. Try it if the table sounds fun. Wishlist if the table sounds like a place you want to live. Do not confuse those two sentences.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for launch week, the prototype, and the sewing loop.

Is this a paid or sponsored review?

No. It is an unpaid fan preview of Prototype 0.5.5. Confirm files on the official [itch.io page](https://elyaradine.itch.io/dressmaker) and dates on the Steam launch page.

Is the Steam version of Dressmaker out?

No. Steam lists 21 September 2026. This page is about the itch prototype only. See prototype notes for the 0.5.5 zips.

Who should skip the prototype?

Anyone who will dislike unfinished seams, a short story, or fiddly lace. Wait for the full shop if you need measurements, off-the-rack selling, or Sewing Assist.

Does paying on itch buy the Steam game?

No. Itch is name-your-price for the prototype. The Steam licence is separate. The current plan announced by the team is a Steam purchase at launch.

What should I play first if I do download it?

Follow Getting Started, then sew one professional library dress using How to Play. That is enough to know if the machine agrees with you.

Will this wiki update after 21 September 2026?

Yes. Treat this review as a prototype snapshot. Launch patches, mannequin sizing, and window selling will need new notes once the Steam shop can actually be played.
